Colourless block copolymers of formula A-B, A-B-A and B-A-B (I) are claimed, in which A is the residue of a polymer obtd. by polymerisation of an epoxide and B is the residue of a polymer obtd. by polymerisation of a cyclic aliphatic carbonate of formula (II) or (III), the polymerisation carried out using an initiator of formula (IV) and the polymer obtd. is then subjected to ozone treatment. In the formulae m, n, p, q = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6; R, R' = H, 1-6C alkyl, 3-6C alkenyl or (1-6C alk(en)yloxy)-(1-6C alkyl); R1 = H, Ph, p-chlorophenyl or p-methoxyphenyl; R2, R3 = H, Me or Et; X = Cl, OR4 (with R4 = 1-8C alkyl or Ph), OCH2CH2OPh, -OCH2CH2OPheCMe2PheOCH2CH2O- or -O-(2-8C alkylene)-O-(with Phe = p-phenylene, and with Al porphyrin residues at each end of the units derived from alpha, omega-diols). Pref., A is based on ethylene or propylene oxide, and B on neopentyl glycol carbonate; pref. (IV) are prepd. by reaction of Et2AlCl with 5, 10, 15, 20- tetraphenyl-21H, 23H-porphyrin. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are used as additives for thermoplastic systems. Use of (IV) as initiator, followed by ozone treatment, gives colourless copolymers (I) which can be used as additives to improve processability or miscibility in polymer systems (e.g. SAN, ABS, PMMA, PVC, polycarbonate blends, etc.) and to confer antistatic properties.
