Before fibres are recovered from fibre-containing material - e.g. rags - by opening the materials in a Garnett-machine, the material is cut in at least two directions into pieces, no longitudinal or lateral dimension of which is substantially more than the mean fibre length in the material. The pieces may be cut parallel to, or inclined, to the warp and welf. The cutting apparatus (see Division B2) may comprise a lattice belt having cutting knives rotating parallel to and transverse to the direction of movement of the belt, and may feed the cut pieces directly to the Garnett machine. The pieces may be laid flat on the belt by rollers, by directing air and/or steam against the material, by toothed devices or by pulsating the lattice.
|
