In a multi-cylinder reciprocatory machine e.g. an I.C. engine or compressor, the camshaft 10, Fig.4 is mounted in brackets 19 secured in V-grooves 35 integral with the cylinder block whereby the cam-shaft assembly can be removed through aperture 30. Inlet and exhaust cams 11, 13, Fig. 1, act through pivoted roller followers 41, 42 on valve tappets 46, 47. Pivot rod 39 which is carried by brackets 19 acts also as a duct for lubricant which passes via radial apertures (44), Fig. 3 (not shown) to bush 43. Shaft 10 has a chain or gear-wheel secured at one end which is removed with the cam-shaft assembly. Decompression. When operating shaft 51 is in the Fig. 4 position spring 59 urges lever 55 to the position shown in which pin 63 does not engage the end of slot 62 in exhaust valve follower 42, thus allowing normal exhaust valve operation. When shaft 51 is moved anticlockwise, lever 55 moves past the dead centre position until abutment 57 engages lever 52. In this position pin 63 engages the end of slot 62 to lift the exhaust valve follower 42 away from its cam to prevent the exhaust valve from closing. An operating lever 64 for an air start valve (not described) is actuated by cam 14 through a follower lever 66. A known fuel injector mechanism 68 is operated by cam 12.
