<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To further reduce memory capacity to be used, to reduce operational complexity, to facilitate hardware formation, and to emphasize contrast of an appropriately gradation-compressed image. <P>SOLUTION: In step S21, logarithmic transformation is performed on luminance of a wide DR image L. In step S22, a logarithmic tone curve correction image logL<SB>c</SB>is produced. In step S23, a logarithmic reduction image logL<SB>cl</SB>is produced and furthermore, luminance logL<SB>cl</SB>(p) of pixels of a logarithmic smoothing image is calculated by interpolating operation. In step S24, a gain value g (p) is calculated for each pixel position. In step S25, luminance logL<SB>u</SB>(p) of pixels of a logarithmic gradation compression image logL<SB>u</SB>is calculated. In step S26, inverse logarithmic transformation is performed on the luminance logL<SB>u</SB>(p).
