Modified graft polymers are made by saponifying or alcoholyzing in the presence of an alkaline or acid catalyst a graft polymer of a vinyl ester or a mixture thereof with a copolymerizable monomer on to a homo- or copolymer of an open chain tertiary N-vinyl amide, e.g. poly - (N - vinyl - N - methylacetamide) or copolymers of N-vinyl-N-methylacetamide and vinyl acetate or 2-ethylethyl acrylate. The Examples describe the alcoholysis or saponification of: (1) and (2) vinyl acetate-poly-(N-vinyl-N-methylacetamide) graft polymers, (3) a vinyl acetate - poly - (N - vinyl - N - methylacetamide-co2-ethylhexyl acrylate) graft polymer, (4) a vinyl acetate/crotonic acid-poly-(N-vinyl-N-methylacetamide) graft polymer (5) a vinyl acetate/isobutyrate - poly - (N - vinyl - N - methylacetamide - co - di - 2 - ethylhexyl maleate) graft polymer, and (6) a vinyl acetate/stearate - poly - (N - vinyl - N - methylacetamide-co-vinyl acetate) graft polymer. The Specification describes also the preparation of the graft polymer starting materials of Examples (4)-(6) by polymerizing the preformed polymers and monomers either in bulk or in solution in an organic solvent. |
