PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To securely detect a position and direction of a ruled line with high accuracy, even when a spurious image is formed in the vicinity of the ruled line, when detecting the position and direction of the ruled line in an image data having the described ruled line. SOLUTION: An image processing method includes the steps of: extracting a plurality of pixel rows each aligned in a substantially perpendicular direction to the ruled line; calculating an average density of the extracted plurality of pixel rows among the pixels disposed in the ruled line direction; comparing the above average density with a predetermined density threshold in a successive order from one end of the pixel rows; obtaining an interval from the first pixel exceeding the predetermined threshold to the last pixel; if the above interval ranges within a predetermined width threshold, detecting the ruled line position to be from the first pixel to the last pixel by determining that a spurious image does not exist from the first pixel to the last pixel, while if the above interval exceeds the predetermined width threshold, determining that the spurious image exists between the first pixel and the last pixel.
