PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent reversing in the contrast in a reflection display mode and a transmission display mode. SOLUTION: The device is equipped with a first absorption type polarizing plate where external light enters, a liquid crystal cell where the light exiting from the first absorption type polarizing plate enters, a second absorption type polarizing plate where the light exiting from the liquid crystal cell enters, and a reflection type polarizing plate where the light exiting from the second absorption type polarizing plate enters. The reflection type polarizing plate has the reflection axis set in a specified direction in such a manner that at least part of the light transmitting through the first absorption type polarizing plate, liquid crystal cell and second absorption type polarizing plate and entering the reflection type polarizing plate is reflected, and the reflection type polarizing plate partially transmits the light having a linearly polarizing component to be transmitted through the second absorption type polarizing plate in the light entering from the side opposite to the second absorption type polarizing plate. The first absorption type polarizing plate has the transmission axis set in a specified direction in such a manner that the light reflected by the reflection type polarizing plate and transmitted through the second absorption type polarizing plate is transmitted through the first absorption type polarizing plate to exit. |
