A method for preparing a negative electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery, and a lithium secondary battery containing the negative electrode active material are provided to enhance capacity characteristics and lifetime characteristics. A method for preparing a negative electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery comprises the steps of (S1) mixing a lithium salt, a vanadium alkoxide compound or its hydrolyzate and optionally a salt containing M in a solvent to prepare a sol; (S2) ultrasonicating the sol to prepare an aerosol; and (S3) spray heat treating the aerosol to prepare a negative electrode active material represented by Li_(1+x) V_(1-x-y) M_y O_(2+z), wherein 0.01<=x<=0.5; 0<=y<=0.3; -0.2<=z<=0.2; and M is an element selected from the group consisting of a transition metal except vanadium, an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, a semimetal and their combination.
