Disclosed is a method for producing a halogen-substituted benzenedimethanol represented by the formula (2) below, which is characterized in that a halogen-substituted terephthalic acid represented by the formula (1) below is reacted with a boron hydride compound in an organic solvent, and the thus-obtained reaction mixture is brought into contact with hydrogen chloride at a temperature of 40-70°C. (1) (In the formula, X1, X2, X3 and X4 independently represent a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom, provided that all of X1, X2, X3 and X4 are not hydrogen atoms at the same time.)
