[Also in Division H1] The atmosphere within an electrical transformer 82, which has windings immersed in oil from conservator 81, is dried by means of device 80 which comprises peltier effect thermoelectric elements 89 which are in thermal contact with helical gas passageway 93, 92, 108 and open cylinder 100. Pressure sensing device 99 senses a rise or fall in gas pressure in the system as the level of oil in conservator 81 rises or falls. If the level falls, control unit 99A opens valve 95 and draws atmospheric air into the system through passageway 93, 92, 108 until the pressure is normalized, and the gas flow then circulates in a closed path through lines 84 and 83, and through drier 80. Elements 89 are energized in a time cycle controlled independently by time switch 50 in such a way that the faces abutting structure 90 are cooled below the dew point of the circulating gas, so that ice forms on the surface of cylinder 100 and also in tube 92 if air is being drawn in, thereby drying the atmosphere. Periodically, the polarity of the current to elements 89 is reversed by switch 50, as the result of which the ice which has formed melts and runs down into funnel 46 and out to detachable container 103 through 102 which is opened by bimetallic strip 57 heated by the reversed polarity deicing current supplied to elements 89. If the level of oil in conservator 81 rises and the pressure in the system increases as a result, pressure sensing device 99 activates control 99A to open valve 96 to so exhaust the pressurized atmosphere into the air. A further embodiment which is substantially different in construction, but which embodies the same principle, is also described, and the invention may also be applied to electrical reactors and to dry-type transformers. |
