PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video playback apparatus and method in which a retrieval property is improved by making quite obvious the context to a current video image. SOLUTION: A video image signal input is entered to a combination circuit 29 via a field memory 22 and a reduction circuit 26. The field memory 22 is controlled by a memory controller 25 so as to freeze only an ordinary video image signal from a video signal input where a video image for index picture generation and an ordinary video image are alternate. After only the ordinary video image signal is frozen in the field memory 22, reduction processing is applied thereto in the reduction circuit 26, and the video image signal is supplied to the combination circuit 29. In a reduction circuit 27, reduction processing of the video image signal is applied for index picture generation, and the video image signal is supplied to a field memory 23.
