An indoor unit of an air conditioner is provided to open or close an air inlet and an air outlet through opposite rotation of a suction flap and a discharge flap by using a single motor, thereby reducing required parts for the opening or closing and preventing immediate suction of discharged air to avoid deterioration of cooling efficiency. An indoor unit of an air conditioner includes right and left suction flaps(43) mounted to right and left suction frames(41) for opening or closing air inlets, right and left discharge flaps(49) mounted to right and left discharge frames(47) for opening or closing air outlets, and flap driving units for driving the right and left suction/discharge flaps for the opening/closing operation. The flap driving unit has a flap driving motor(54) mounted to a suction flap frame, a pinion gear attached to an output of the flap driving motor, a suction flap driving gear mounted to the suction flap and engaged with the pinion gear, and a discharge flap driving gear mounted to the discharge flap and engaged with the suction flap driving gear. In either the right or left side, the suction flap and the discharge flap are opened while rotating simultaneously by the flap driving motor in the opposite direction from each other.
