A machine tool comprises an indexable tool turret 12, Fig. 1, carrying axially slidable tool spindle quills 13, a spindle 60 for driving a selected tool spindle 15 at the operating position, and a co-ordinate work-table 11. Turret 12 is suspended from a lockable carriage 23, moved vertically by lead screws 52, driven by a motor 58, and spindle 60 is rotated by a motor 64 through a belt drive 63. Each quill 13 is releasably held in a retracted position in the turret by a pivoted latch 18, Fig. 3. The selected spindle 15 is brought into engagement with drill spindle 60 so that clutch members on these spindles are engaged, by a fluid pressure cylinder 86, and the quill 13 is clamped to a feed block 87 by a clamp 99. The turret is indexed by a motor 67 through gearing 65, 66, and is located in the indexed position by a pin 68 actuated so as to enter a bush 70, by an hydraulic motor 69. The turret is clamped by a spring urged clamp 72, which is released by hydraulic fluid supplied through a conduit 80. A number of similar clamps 83 are provided for the quills 13. |
