PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for easily removing metal impurities from an indole derivative trimer containing the metal impurities.

SOLUTION: An indole derivative trimer containing metal impurities is mixed with an imidazole compound in a solvent containing water under heating. The indole derivative trimer from which the metal impurities are removed is separated from the obtained mixture by filtration. The indole derivative trimer containing metal impurities is mixed with a protonic acid to simultaneously carry out doping of the indole derivative trimer and removal of metal impurities. The electrode active substance of an electrochemical cell comprises the indole derivative trimer.
