<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transfer apparatus capable of preventing the meandering of a transfer belt, and the occurrence of waving of the transfer belt, and capable of regularly detecting the surface of the transfer belt, and to provide an image forming apparatus equipped with the transfer apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The transfer apparatus 39 includes the transfer belt 22 that is supported by a plurality of belt support members 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 so that the belt travels freely, and on which a plurality of images are transferred in an overlapped state; a meandering preventing member 22a, arranged on at least one side of the rear surface of the transfer belt 22 all over the area in the circumferential direction of the belt 22, and that can come into contact with the side ends of the belt supporting members 17, 18, 19 and 20, and for preventing the meandering of the transfer belt 22; and a detecting means 40, arranged facing the transfer belt 22, to detect the position and density of the image formed on the surface of the transfer belt 22.
