<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photo detection element where the light reception sensitivity and the response speed will not deteriorate, even with respect to a light source turned into one of shortened-wavelength. <P>SOLUTION: An electrode 21 with light-shielding properties on the surface of ferroelectrics is provided; the electrode is divided into a plurality of unit regions with a predetermined light intensity and a region with a lower level in the light intensity than a plurality of the unit region; and the application of a bias voltage between electrodes generates polarization changes, only in the regions with a higher level in light intensity, which causes a displacement current.
