PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which current resolving-power for obtaining a desired transfer current can be kept nearly constant even when the value of a working transfer voltage is changed due to a change in the resistance value of a transfer roller attributable to temperature and humidity in the apparatus and an energization time. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has: an image carrier carrying a toner image; a second image carrier or a transfer material to which the toner image carried on the image carrier is transferred; a transfer member for transferring the toner image on the image carrier to the second image carrier or the transfer material; a transfer voltage generating means for applying a transfer voltage to the transfer member; a transfer voltage instruction value generating means comprising a D/A converter generating a transfer voltage instruction value for instructing the transfer voltage to be output by the transfer voltage generating means; and a transfer voltage instruction value converting means converting the transfer voltage instruction value so as to progressively change the transfer voltage with respect to the transfer voltage instruction value.
