PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a navigation device capable of preventing wrong recognition or wrong traveling of a user at a spot such as a narrow Y-shaped branch point. SOLUTION: This device is equipped with a gradient guide determination means 7 for determining necessity of gradient guide relative to a road gradient at a characteristic point satisfying a prescribed condition on the optimum route calculated by a route search means; a route guide means 5 for generating guide data when determined that the gradient guide is necessary by the gradient guide determination means, when a position detected by a position azimuth detection means becomes within a prescribed distance from the characteristic point; and an output means 6 for outputting a guide message based on the guide data generated by the route guide means.
