PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve train facilitating shim attaching/detaching work by positively preventing the fall of a shim for absorbing a clearance between a reference wall part and a body of a valve characteristic adjusting mechanism of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: A space Da between inner surfaces 164d of the shim 164 is larger than a width Dc between retreat faces 130c, so that a sufficient allowance can be provided between the retreat faces 130c and the shim 164 to facilitate attaching/detaching work to/from a rocker shaft 130 when selecting the shim 164. Since the space Da between the inner surfaces 164d is smaller than a diameter Db of a base outer peripheral surface 130d of the rocker shaft 130, the shim 164 is prevented from falling from the rocker shaft 130 because the shim 164 does not rotate large. Further, the retreat faces 130c extend into the internal space of swing cams 124, 126, positive pressure or negative pressure of gas and liquid generated in the swing cams 124, 126 can be easily discharged to the outside of an intermediate drive mechanism 120.
