<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a retardation compensation element which brings about an effective retardation compensating action even to hybrid aligned TN liquid crystal molecules at a low cost. <P>SOLUTION: In the retardation compensation element 10 which compensates retardation accompanying birefringence of a light ray passing through a TN liquid crystal layer, and which comprises a first retardation compensation layer 12 compensating retardation caused by vertically aligned liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer, second retardation compensation layers 13, 14 compensating retardation caused by hybrid aligned liquid crystal molecules, and a transparent substrate 11 supporting these retardation compensation layers, the second retardation compensation layers 13, 14 are constructed with oblique vapor deposition films produced by oblique vapor deposition of an inorganic material on mutually facing two surfaces of the substrate 11, wherein at least one out of azimuthal angles and polar angles between vapor deposition directions and vapor deposition surfaces are made mutually different between those of the second retardation compensation layers 13, 14. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
