PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner that can maintain the optimal refrigerating cycle state and derive the capacity to a maximum extent, by detecting the refrigerating cycle state just before a stop of a compressor on detecting OFF signal of a thermostat, promoting the pressure balance during the stop of the compressor by adjusting the opening of an expansion valve, and preventing a liquid refrigerant from returning to the suction side at a time when ON signal of the thermostat is detected and the compressor is started. SOLUTION: Indoor and outdoor air temperatures are detected when OFF signal of the thermostat is detected, and the expansion valve during the stop of the compressor is made to wait ready not in the full closed state but in an opening state determined based on the indoor and outdoor air temperatures. Thus, the durability of the expansion valve is secured, the liquid compression is avoided, the compressor is started certainly, and the refrigerating cycle is stabilized early.
