AXLE ASSEMBLY PROVIDED WITH BEARING ADJUST MECHANISM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved device for setting preload of a bearing and backlash of a gear.

SOLUTION: The axle assembly 12 contains an axle housing 14, a differential assembly 20 which is supported within the axle housing 14 by a differential bearing 28, a bearing insert 32, an adjuster sleeve 34 and a lock ring 36. The bearing insert 32 is fixed to the axle housing 14. The adjuster sleeve 34 is rotatably fixed to the bearing insert 32 in position prior to mounting. The adjuster sleeve 34 engages with the differential bearing 28 and gives a preload on the differential bearing 28. The lock ring 36 is disposed between the bearing insert 32 and the adjuster sleeve 34 in a mounting position. The lock ring 36 prevents the bearing insert 32 and the adjuster sleeve 34 from relatively shifting and maintains a desired preload of the differential bearing 28.
