A device to distinguish between a rechargeable secondary cell and a non-rechargeable primary cell comprises at least one electrode (2) near but galvanically separated from the cell (1) casing (4), connection (7) to a cell pole (5,6), a unit (3) to determine an electrical characteristic of the casing and output a signal (A) indicating cell type. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a process for the above; (B) a charger for a secondary cell comprising the above;and (C) an electrical unit supplied by a cell above.
