Disclosed is a method, referred to as COBRA, for the labelling of a set of at least two bioorganic molecules, such as a nucleic acid, carbohydrate or lipid molecule, with a set of at least two colours, comprising generating said set of colours through combining ratio labelling with binary labelling. The total number of distinguishable colours of said combination can, at least in the case wherein two flurophores are simultaneously used per target, be calculated by the following formula: Wherein n is the number of flurophores used for ratio labelling, m to binary label the same target, and r is the number of ratios that is resolved by ratio labelling. Such methods may also use probes labeled with dies in distinct rations as a primary label, particular, and is also labeled with a first binary label that is distinct from the primary label.
