<p>Prodn. of phthalic acids by oxidation of benzene derivs. (I) with at least one methyl gp. (e.g. m- and p-xylenes and m- or p- tolualdehydes) in soln. in an aliphatic carboxylic acid (II), by stirring the mixt. at 80-105 deg.C (estp. >90 deg.C) for at least 5 days at atmospheric pressure in the pres. of practically pure molecular oxygen and a cobalt-contg. catalyst (III). Pref. the ratio II:I = 6:1 to 25:1 and the amt. (III) = 0.003-0.025 pts. per pt. rea. mixt. The rea medium may also contain 0.5-15% water (on II). High yields, pure product, no promoter necessary, single stage process, no expensive equipment reqd.</p> |
