PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alumina-based adsorbent capable of efficiently removing a surfactant contained in sampled water. SOLUTION: The alumina-based adsorbent, the isoelectric point of which is adjusted by depositing a metal oxide on the surface of intermediate alumina, is used so that the surfactant in the sampled water can be removed efficiently by a simple method. In particular, since the surfactant can be adsorbed selectively and removed from the sampled water containing the surfactant and other organic substances and the load of the coexistent organic substances on the alumina-based adsorbent can be reduced, the amount of the alumina-based adsorbent to be used can be reduced and the exchange frequency of the alumina-based adsorbent can be decreased. At a step of solubilizing, purifying or reconstructing membrane protein, the surfactant added to a biological sample or the like can be removed substantially to the extent that the residual surfactant exerts no bad influence on a measurement system.
