<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform edge emphasis on each brightness signal without emphasizing a noise component. <P>SOLUTION: A first filter 31 detects a minute range edge component E1 of each noticed pixel by using an input brightness signal Y0 of a first surrounding pixel located in the surrounding of the noticed pixel in the noticed pixel and 3×3 area. A subtractor 32 subtracts the minute range edge component E1 from the input brightness signal Y0, and generates a noise removal signal F1 of each noticed pixel. A second filter 34 detects a large range edge component E2 of each noticed pixel by using an input brightness signal Y0 of a second surrounding pixel located in the surrounding of the noticed pixel in the noticed pixel and 5×5 area.
