1,173,479. Production of malononitrile. ARTHUR D. LITTLE Inc. 24 Nov., 1967 [28 Nov., 1966], No. 53679/67. Heading C2C. Malononitrile is obtained by a single, integrated process comprising the steps of (a) first reacting gaseous HCN and chlorine in essentially equal molar ratios over activated charcoal at a temperature between 100‹ and 250‹ C. for a period of 4 to 10 seconds, and (b) reacting the resulting product mixture containing cyanogen chloride and by-product hydrogen chloride with acetonitrile for a period of from 3 to 8 seconds and at a temperature between 600‹ and 750‹ C., said acetonitrile being present in an amount in excess of the stoichiometric quantity required to react with said cyanogen chloride to form malononitrile, and (c) isolating said malononitrile. |
