[Also in Division C3] An adhesive dip for coating tyre cord comprises a resorcinol-aldehyde resin condensed at 100-160‹C with 0.02-0.20 moles per mole of resorcinol of an isocyanate, RNCO, where R is C 1-4 alkyl, C 3-5 alkenyl, cyclohexyl, phenyl, C 1-4 alkylphenyl, C 1-4 alkoxyphenyl or chlorophenyl. Aldehydes specified include formaldehyde and butyraldehyde. The resin may be dehydrated by heat before the isocyanate treatment. Isocyanates specified include methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, butyl, allyl and o-chlorophenyl isocyanates. The adhesive dip is prepared by diluting the resin with water, adding a rubber latex and adjusting the pH with alkali, e.g. N and H or NH 4 OH. The final dip may have a pH of 6-11 and a solids content of 15-25%. ZnO may be added as a stabilizer. In Examples the latex is of butadiene-vinyl-pyridine polymer. It is applied to polyester tyre cord in a dipping machine, the excess is removed and the adhesive dried and cured at up to 500‹F whilst the cord is stretched 3-4%.</p> |
