[Also in Divisions C4 and A2] Dyes having medical usage are obtained by subjecting tea stock to heat treatment at 95‹C or above to decompose enzymes, extracting the treated stock with a solvent comprising ethyl alcohol and/or water at a temperature below the boiling point of the solvent, separating the extract by decantation, filtration centrifuging or other liquid/solid separating techniques and drying the resultant liquid to give a powdered product. The dye contains a tannin-catechin complex which incorporates simple and complex catechins, including at least one of d,1- catechin, 1-epicatechin, d,1-gallocatechin, 1-epigallocatechin, 1-epigcatechingallate, 1-epigallocatechingallate, together with amino acids, carbohydrates and trace elements. A green dye is obtained by extraction with ethyl alcohol. A yellow dye is obtained by extraction with water. A brown dye is obtained from the green or yellow dyes by humidifying to 8-10% and heating at 85‹-95‹C for 1-12 hours. A red dye is obtained by mixing the yellow, green or brown dye with a garden beet extract or some other vegetable extract containing a red pigment in an aqueous medium at an elevated temperature, followed by drying the pigment. Treating the green, yellow or brown dye in an aqueous medium with ethyl acetate yields on orange or pink dye. A black dye is obtained by adding the green, yellow or brown dye to a solution of a complexing agent, e.g. iron lactate, heating to 90-100‹C and drying. Ascorbic acid may also be added to the dyes. The dyes may be decaffeinated by treatment with chloroform or dichloroethane. The dyes may be used for the treatment of dysentery. The black dye may be used as a means of raising the content of haemoglobin in blood and as a hair tonic. The green or yellow dyes may be incorporated into tooth pastes as a gum tonic.
