PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data management device for an image forming apparatus, having rich diversity, allowing unified data management, and allowing improvement of convenience of a user such as portability or confidentiality of data. SOLUTION: This data management device 1 has: a function of holding and managing metadata including information for managing storage document data or a document name for retrieving the storage document data, a user name, a term characterizing contents of a document or the like in each piece of the storage document data correspondingly to the storage document data; a function of outputting them to an information terminal device 13 as document data; a function of taking in and outputting the metadata accompanying the storage document data; an editing function of arbitrarily registering, deleting, or changing contents of the metadata; a function of converting a data format of the storage document data to be outputted; a function of retrieving the desired storage document data by use of the metadata based on a retrieval condition for retrieving the desired storage document data; and a function of making the user recognize the corresponding storage document data according with the retrieval condition or according to the preset retrieval condition.
