A hybrid drive system (1, 10 see figs 1,2) for a vehicle comprises a traction battery 4, an internal combustion engine 2 and an electric drive (3 see figs 1,2). The internal combustion engine 2 and the electric drive (3) provide propulsion drives and are configured to be operatively and selectively coupled to a transmission (7 see figs 1,2). The internal combustion engine 2 comprises heating means (6 see figs 1,2) for pre-heating a selected portion of the internal combustion engine 2. The traction battery 4 is coupled to the heating means (6) and configured so as to be able to provide electric power to the heating means (6) whilst the propulsion drives are switched off. A control unit 15 may supply current to at least one resistive heating element 11-14 whilst the engine 2 is not propelling the vehicle. Thus, heating may be provided to the cylinder head 28, fuel intake line 22, air intake system 17 or a cooling jacket 23 for a cylinder 5. Preheating may reduce exhaust emissions on starting the engine 2. |
