The device has an electromechanical steering including an actuator (2) to exert a resistive force to the steering, where the force controls a steering movement. A control unit (14) produces control signals to control the force, based on a determined steering speed. The control unit detects a hand steering moment signal and produces the control signals based on a hand steering moment represented by the hand steering moment signal. The control unit produces the control signals so that an increasing resistive force of the actuator during an increasing determined steering speed is requested. An independent claim is also included for a method for protecting an electromechanical steering of a vehicle.
