A media recognition apparatus including an image sensor part, an input/output direction estimating part, and a tilt correction part is provided to improve a precision in an estimation of a media input/output direction by minimizing a time to be required to an input/output direction estimation of media. A media recognition apparatus(100) inputs a media through a media input hole(105). The media input hole generates signal if the media recognition apparatus senses the input of media. The media recognition apparatus is transferred by the transport module(120) to the prescribed direction when sensing the signal. An image sensor(115) scans an image of the media in which a LED irradiates a light. The image sensor scans a domain which is greater than the media standard. A scanned image includes an image and margin image of media. The image sensor is comprised of a charge coupled device or a contact image sensor. A tilt correction part(130) corrects a tilt in case that the media is not arranged horizontally.
