In a loop or cross-scavenged I. C. engine having piston controlled exhaust and scavenging ports the cylinder head has a recess 6, Fig. 2 located on the cylinder axis and having a periphery 8 spaced inwardly from the side wall, an injection nozzle 7 supplying fuel towards the inner wall of the recess for the temporary rejection of injected fuel in the recess whereby the fuel is carried away on the scavenging air stream so that the fuel mixture is in the form of a layer on the inner surface of the cylinder which is relatively uniform and becomes leaner towards the central region of the swirl, ignition being effected in the recess. Exhaust and scavenging ports (2)(3) Fig. 1 (not shown) are closed by the piston 1, Fig. 2 and fuel from injector nozzle 7<SP>1</SP> is directed in diverging streams into the scavenging air loop S so that the charge is directed into a stratified layer along the cavity 6. In a modification of this embodiment a nozzle (7), Fig. 3 (not shown) is located upstream from a spark plug 11. In further modifications the fuel is injected to a lower part of the air swirl S or the tip of the injection valve (17), (Fig. 15)is curved towards the air stream S to inject a gaseous fuel e. g. propane, kerosene and light oil. In a further embodiment the cylinder head has a cavity 6, (Fig. 19) of sectoral contour shape in which two spark plugs are provided. The spark plugs may also be positioned symetrically with respect to the centre line of cavity 6. In a further embodiment a sectoral-shaped cavity (6), Fig. 23 (not shown) is arranged in a spherically-shaped cylinder head. The invention may be applied to cross-scavenged engines using glow plug or hot bulb ignition.
