<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection liquid crystal display device allowing a high contrast ratio to be obtained. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes: a liquid crystal panel 8 wherein a liquid crystal layer 10 is interposed and enclosed between a first substrate 34 having a plurality of reflective pixel electrodes 12 formed thereon and a light-transmissive second substrate 38 having a common electrode 36 formed thereon, which are so disposed that the pixel electrodes and the common electrode face each other, and made incident light on the liquid crystal layer and reflected by the pixel electrodes is optically modulated by an image signal; a light source 2 which radiates light to the liquid crystal panel; a visualizing means 32 which visualizes an image on the basis of light emitted from the liquid crystal panel; and a phase plate 40 which is provided in an optical path between the visualizing means and the liquid crystal panel rotationally adjustably with respect to an extension direction of the optical path and has a thickness corresponding to an optical length of a prescribed proportion of a wavelength of visible light in order to adjust misalignment of a polarization axis caused by the liquid crystal panel. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
