PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a battery charging device for an electric vehicle which reduces voltage variations among battery cells without preparing a balancer circuit. SOLUTION: This battery charging device for an electric vehicle includes: a battery unit 2 installed on an electric vehicle 1; a battery pack 27 electrically connected to a plurality of battery cells 21 as a secondary battery and built in the battery unit 2; a power supply 31 supplying charging current to the battery pack 27; switching means 22 for switching a circuit to charge current to the battery pack 27 between a series circuit or a parallel circuit; and control means 26, 34 for controlling the operations of the switching means so as to charge the battery pack by electrically connecting the battery pack by the series circuit to supply charging current upon the start of charging and thereafter electrically connecting the battery pack by the parallel circuit to supply charging current.
