PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an intermediate transfer device and an image forming apparatus capable of applying lubricant to the surfaces of all the image carriers to lower the surface friction coefficient, using a simple constitution, and improving the cleansing properties. SOLUTION: The intermediate transfer device is equipped with an intermediate transfer body (e) arranged inbetween photoreceptor drums 1a, 1b, 1c and 1e which are arranged in image forming units (a), (b), (c) and (d) and secondary transfer members 18a, 18b, 18c and 18d, and transfers toner from the photoreceptor drums 1a, 1b, 1c and 1e, while being brought into contact with the photoreceptor drums 1a, 1b, 1c and 1e and the secondary transfer members 18a, 18b, 18c and 18d, to form an image. The intermediate transfer device is equipped with a lubricant-applying device (f) transferring powder lubricant applied to the intermediate transfer body (e) to the image carrier in the image forming unit, while keeping powder lubricant as it is, and the lubricant is made a thin film on the image carrier.
