1,267,747. I. C. engine cylinder heads. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG A. G. Oct. 3, 1969 [Oct. 4, 1968], No.48834/69. Heading F1B. Two inlet and two exhaust valve cages 9 and 10 for each cylinder are removably supported in the cylinder head for a liquid-cooled compression ignition engine on a substantially annular projection 6 from the cylinder head wall 2 which extends parallel to the opposite ends walls 4 and 5 of head. Clearances a are provided between the cages 9 and 10 and the head between the projection 6 and the end-wall 4. The cages are urged into engagement with the seatings 13 on the projection 6 by spring washers 14 interposed between the head and a housing 13A. The projection 6 is connected to the end-wall 4 by annular elements 8 connected by substantially tangential webs 7 to the head wall 2 and one to another, Fig. 1 (not shown). Coolant apertures are defined between the webs 7, the walls 2 and 4 and the elements 8. The inner ends of the apertures a are closed by seals 16, e. g. soft or labyrinth seals or metal rings. The two exhaust valve cages have annular cooling spaces 27 formed in rings 29 electron beam welded to the remainder of the cages. Coolant is fed from chambers 22 through bores 23 and past the valve stem guide 17 to passages 25 and 26 opening to the spaces 27. Coolant is returned through passages and bores 28, 25a, 24a, and 23a. Air is fed to the inlet valve cages through a rectangular cross-section passage (19), Fig. 3 (not shown), and respective part circular passages (20, 21), Fig. 5 (not shown), from the exhaust valve cage lead to a common circular exhaust outlet.
