PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal aligning agent that has a high voltage retention ratio and excellent process dependence of pretilt angle and provides a liquid crystal alignment layer and a polymer and a raw material diamine therefor. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal aligning agent comprises a polyamic acid composed of a diamine compound represented by formula (I) (wherein R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each mutually independently a 1-12C alkyl group, a 1-12C haloalkyl group or a halogen atom; X and Y are each an ester bond or an amide bond; Z is an ester bond, an amide bond or an oxygen atom; and a is an integer of 0-4) and a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride or its imidated polymer.
