摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fluorescent substance for emitting a high luminance and high characteristic green fluorescence having a comparatively short emission peak wavelength and a narrow half band width. <P>SOLUTION: The fluorescent substance has a chemical composition represented by the following formula: (M<SP>I</SP><SB>(1-x)</SB>M<SP>II</SP><SB>x</SB>)<SB>&alpha;</SB>SiO<SB>&beta;</SB>(wherein M<SP>I</SP>is two or more kinds of elements including at least Ba and Sr, selected from the group consisting of Ba, Sr, Ca, Zn and Mg. With the premise that the molar ratios of Ba and Sr with respect to total M<SP>I</SP>are [Ba] and [Sr] respectively, the value represented by [Ba]/[Sr] is in a range of 8.5&le;[Ba]/[Sr]&le;100. M<SP>II</SP>is one or more kinds of divalent or trivalent metal elements.
