PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a noncontact mechanical seal appropriately used as a shaft sealing means for a rotating apparatus requiring to consider a severe countermeasure against contamination, without generating metal ion or particle by contact of sealing rings with seal gas or fluid in a housing or mutual contact of the sealing rings. SOLUTION: This noncontact mechanical seal 1 is so configured that while the sealing ring 4 on the side of the housing, provided on the shaft penetrating wall portion 20 of the housing 21 of the rotating apparatus and the sealing ring 6 on the side of a shaft, provided on a rotating shaft 22 penetrating through the shaft penetrating portion 20 are maintained in a noncontact state by feeding the seal gas 90 from a seal gas passage 8 formed in the sealing ring 4 on the side of the housing to a portion between the opposed end surfaces 4a, 6a of both the sealing rings 4, 6, a region H inside of the apparatus where the fluid in the housing exists and a region L outside of the apparatus are shielded and sealed.
