PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sample scanner device that automatically determines a sample position (cover glass) without causing tenebrescence in a transparent sample and a fluorescent sample susceptible to tenebrescence. SOLUTION: The sample scanner device is used in a microscope in which a sample is placed on a slide glass, the slide glass with the sample covered with a sample protective member for protecting it is placed on a stage, and the sample is observed. The scanner device includes: a scanning control means for causing a predetermined laser beam to relatively scan the slide glass; a light intensity detecting means for detecting the intensity of reflected laser beam subjected to scanning; and a sample holding member recognizing means for recognizing the position of the sample holding member on the slide glass based upon the position of the surface of the slide glass scanned by the scanning control means and based upon the intensity of the reflected light corresponding to the position detected by the light intensity detecting means.
