An apparatus and a method for transmitting or receiving data are provided to reduce time in beam forming and to prevent unnecessary calculation caused by a receipt side workstation. An apparatus for transmitting or receiving data includes a CPU(410), a memory(420), an MAC(Media Access Control) unit(430), a communication unit(440), an antenna unit(450), a pattern generator(460), a response pattern sensor(470), a communication performance checker(480) and an antenna controller(490). The CPU processes a received MSDU(MAC Service Data Unit) provided by the MAC unit or generates a transmitted MSDU and provides the transmitted data for the MAC unit. The memory stores data. The MAC unit adds an MAC header to the transmitted MSDU and generates an MPDU(MAC Protocol Data Unit). The communication unit converts the MPDU into wireless signals and transmits the converted wireless signals via a communication channel. For this, the communication unit composed of a baseband processor and an RF unit, is connected to the antenna unit which includes at least one antenna. The communication performance checker checks communication performance of an antenna unit installed in the other side workstation by referring to received communication performance data. The antenna controller controls the antenna unit formed according to a beam forming mode determined by referring the communication performance of a receipt side antenna unit and the transmitting side antenna unit. The pattern generator generates a transmission antenna weighting vector pattern. The response pattern sensor analyzes a feedback response pattern received in response to the transmission antenna weighting vector pattern. According to the analysis result, the antenna controller controls the antenna unit.
