<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical recording medium enabling excellent recording and reproduction by a laser having a wavelength of 300-900 nm, and a new azo metal chelate compound. <P>SOLUTION: The optical recording medium contains the azo metal chelate compound expressed by general formula (1) in a recording layer. In the formula, R1, R2 and R3 each denote a hydrogen atom, a substituted or non-substituted alkyl group or the like independently, and P1 and P2 denote the hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group or the like independently. They may be bonded mutually to form a hydrocarbon ring which may have a substituent or a heterocycle which may have the substituent.
