PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector designed so that even when a person stands in front of a screen as in the case of a presentation, light is not reduced or turned off either without degrading safety. SOLUTION: The data projector for displaying images by projection includes: a projection lens 2 that emits illuminating light; an object detection sensor 4 that is attached to a surface where the projection lens 2 is attached and measures a distance between the detected object and the data projector; and an optical control means 16 that decreases the luminance of illumination light emitted from the projection lens, when a determination is made during the image projection that the distance of the detected object is equal to or within a shortest focal distance.
