Production of large castings uses a mold (2) and core (3) and the molten metal is actively cooled during solidification and then its temperature is controlled to produce the desired structure. The temperatures of different areas of the mold and core are monitored and controlled to desired values. An independent claim is included for apparatus for carrying out the method, in which the mold and core are fitted with heating and cooling units (6, 7) and temperature sensors (8) at several points.
