<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an absorption type polarizer which is easy to manufacture, and a manufacturing method thereof. <P>SOLUTION: The absorption type polarizer 10 is constituted by forming a light absorbing film 14 of a material having a light absorbing component on a top surface of a transparent substrate 12 having unevenness in a triangular-wave shape formed on the top surface continuously in fixed cycles. When random polarized light is made incident on the top surface (uneven surface) of the absorption type polarizer 10, a polarized light component (S wave) having a waveform parallel to ridge lines and groove lines of the unevenness is absorbed by the light absorbing film 14, and a polarized component (P wave) having a waveform perpendicular to the ridge lines and groove lines of the unevenness is transmitted through the light absorbing film. In this case, the formation cycles of the unevenness need not be always shorter than the wavelength of light, so the absorption type polarizer 10 can easily be manufactured. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
