PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a range finder which can simplify a circuit for driving an imaging element and reducing the load on a CPU. SOLUTION: A first range finder 10A comprises a synchronized signal generation part 24 generating synchronized signals Sa at constant intervals, a light emitting means 14 launching modulated light 12 obtained by intensity modulation based on the inputting of the synchronized signals Sa, a light receiving means 20 for receiving reflected light 18 from a detected object illuminated with the modulated light 12 based on the inputting of the synchronized signals Sa, a computation means 22 for calculating the distance to the detected object from a phase difference between the modulated light 12 and the reflected light 18, and a synchronized signal control means 64 for changing arrival time of the synchronized signals Sa from the generation part 24 to the receiving means 20 according to the number of generation times of the synchronized signals Sa. The receiving means 20 is used for sampling the light amount of the reflected light 18 during an exposure period set for each of certain cycles on the basis of the inputting of the synchronized signals Sa.
