PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably output harmonics of high power by suppressing breakage of or damage to nonlinear optical crystal due to an electric field. SOLUTION: A wavelength converting element includes MgO:LiNbO<SB>3</SB>(PPMgLN) having a periodic polarization inversion structure, and the PPMgLN has a +Z surface and a -Z surface covered with a Cr thin film 50c. Then the PPMgLN is so arranged that an end surface on a -X side in a length direction is an incident surface for a laser basic wave and an end surface on a +X side in the length direction is an output surface. Consequently, the PPMgLN can be prevented from being broken or damaged with an electric field even when a laser basic wave of high power is made incident.
